and other short term
courses in Nautical
stream. The institute has
been set up by Indian
Centre for Advancement
of Research & Education
(ICARE) in collaboration
with FMIRO (FOSMA
Maritime Institute &
Research Education),
Mumbai. The Institute is
affiliated to West Bengal
University of Technology
for conducting 3 years
B.Sc. Nautical Science
(BNS) and to Indira
Gandhi Nautical Open
University for conducting
1 year diploma in
Nautical Science.
The following Courses are being conducted in the Institute
3 years B. Sc. degree in Nautical Science (BNS) under WBUT.
1 year Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B. Sc. under IGNOU.
Short term course as required by industries like All India Dredge Cadet.
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMME
AT its campus HIMSAR offers both short duration certificate courses as well as long term programmes that culminate in the award of a university degree. The short course are either focused, training oriented to enhance the skills.
Degree programmes prepare the students for a career in the shipping industry and is designed to impart an education that the candidate has strong foundation in theoretical principles and a strong practical skill. BNS course is spread over a period of 3 years and is divided in to six semesters. During this three years residential course in addition to theoretical and practical training student’s are required to participate in the co-curricular and extra curricular activities of the institute. The curriculum has an appropriate mix of classroom sessions, labs, practical training and project work, programme provides for 32 hrs. of contact hrs, per week with faculty in structured manner. In addition the students are expected to prepare for the ground to be covered during the contact sessions and for evaluation tests. Cadets are also required to complete projects and assignments programme is very rigorous and demanding.
CAREER PATH & JOB OPPORTUNITIES
After successful completion of the B. Sc. degree from Haldia Institute of Maritime Studies and Research (HIMSAR) the cadet officers is required to put in one year sea service on board a Merchant ship to become eligible to appear for the certificate of competency as second Mate (FG) exam, conducted by Directorate General of Shipping. The graduate cadets are entitled to certain exemptions in qualifying sea service and written exam for the certificate of competency examination.
From the rank of Trainee Nautical Officer, Cadets will progress to a 3rd Officer / 2nd Officer, Chief Officer and ultimately the Captain i.e. Master of the Vessel.

QUALIFICATION & ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Academic Standard: (10+2) or equivalent securing minimum 60% in PCM (Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) & 50% in English either in (10+2) or 10th standard.
Age Limit: Not more than 20 years on 1st October.
Physical Standard: The candidate must be Medically fit and should meet the Medical Requirements as per M. S. Rule 2000 (for further details please see Medical Requirement in selection procedure).
Eye Sight: Vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately without visionary aid and no colour blindness
The institute is built in 10 acres self-contained campus having facilities for medical, post office, banking, ATM, canteen, grocery shop, Xerox and internet facilities. Academic block has 8 spacious classrooms , labs (physics, chemistry, computer) workshop (pneumatic, hydraulic, machine, carpentry, plumbing) and simulators for Radar, Arpa, Navigation and GMDSS. The lab and workshops are well-equipped. Labs and workshops of HIT is also used by our Cadets from time to time.
ICARE has a policy of resource sharing among its various constituent colleges. Separate hostel facilities are provided for boys and girls. Boys and girls hostel are completely isolated and have all facilities as required by D. G. Shipping.
Resident Medical Officer visit hostels every day for minor ailments. The institute has tie-up arrangement with B. C. Roy Hospital for referral cases. Ambulance facilities are provided on 24 hours basis.
